Ten years ago, the tragedy of September 11 took place in front of the whole world’s bewildered eyes. Every year since 2001, the city of New York commemorates its heroes and remembers all the men and women who lost their lives.

Many ceremonies are organized all over the city for this 10th anniversary. Together, in music, prayers, poetry, silence, thoughts… come and join those who commemorate the tragedy in numerous moments of contemplation and recollection, which will take place on September 11, 2011 in New York.

- 1. The official September 11 commemoration ceremony at Ground Zero
New York City’s official ceremony will take place at the World Trade Center, Sunday September 11, 2011, between 8:40 am and 12:30 pm. Like in previous years, four moments of silence will take place, commemorating the impacts of the two airplanes and the fall of the towers. Texts will be read in honor of the victims. Only families of the victims are invited to the event.

- 2. National inauguration of the September 11 Memorial
The Memorial will be inaugurated in the presence of President Barack Obama, Governor of the State of New York Andrew Cuomo, Governor of the State of New Jersey Chris Christie, and Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg, as well as other American public figures. The Memorial will be open to public starting September 12, only upon reservation through the Internet.

- 3. The September Concerts
As every year, a dozen of free concerts will take place all over New York, in order to “fill the sky with music” thanks to the September Concerts. You may attend at Central Park, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Castle Clinton National Monument, Rockefeller Center, or Washington Square Park, among other places.

- 4. September 11, National Service Day
The government attributed the name of Solidarity Day to September 11. It has become a day in which people come to the aid of those who need them. If you wish to participate, you may consult the website and help your neighbor on September 11.

- 5. Solidarity Chain of September 11
Rendezvous on the southern banks of Manhattan to form the longest possible solidarity chain. Determination, unity and remembrance are the key-words of the Association Hand in Hand – Remembering 9/11, which wishes to go as far North as possible in Manhattan with this human chain. Participants will gather starting 7:30 am and will hold hands symbolically at 8:46 am – the hour of the first airplane crash. They will be able to go to Battery Park and put a message on the Wall of Remembrance, of which fragments will be exhibited at the September 11 Museum. Registration is mandatory.
Where : NY’s seafront, a precise location will be given once registered.

- 6. Battery Park
During the weekend, the park near Ground Zero will host numerous events to commemorate the attacks. The wall of Remembrance will receive messages of all those who wish to express themselves. More than 3000 flags will be raised over the place. Each of them will hold the name of a victim of September 11, 2001. During the preparations for the weekend, the public is invited to come on Friday and leave their messages, which will be exhibited as well in the park until Monday.

- 7. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral
Choir concert at the Saint Patrick Cathedral, by the NY Choral Society and the Young People’s Chorus of NYC.

- 8. Exhibition “Here is New York” – revisited
Beginning in 2001, the “Here is New York” project gathers more than 5000 clichés of the City taken by more than 3000 amateur and professional photographers. United by an initial exhibition, part of the photographs will be displayed again by The School of Visual Arts.

- 9. International Center of Photography
The Center will hold an exhibition on the consequences of the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Historic Richmond Town has gathered 10 years of footages since the attacks which it is now showing along with works by Vinnie Amesse.

- 11. Remember to Love: 10th anniversary of September 11 at Trinity Church, Wall Street
As in previous years since the catastrophe, Trinity Church holds an entire week of commemoration events for the attacks. This year, the theme of the week is “Remember to love”.

- 12. New York Philharmonic concert for the 10th anniversary of September 11
Conducted by Alan Gilbert, with Soprano Dorothea Röschmann, Mezzo-Soprano Michelle DeYoung and the New York Choral Artists.

- 13. On-Stage commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11
The Joyce Theater will show two plays outdoors.

- 14. The Messages of Wave Hill
All visitors may leave a message in honor of September 11. Messages will be written on biodegradable paper and posted on the Wave Hill Pergola for a week, then sent to a compost site. Free admission for everyone on September 11.

- 18. “To a great city”: urban immobility
Visit New York in a musical fashion and enjoy the architecture of the city. Many of New York’s not-so-ordinary places – usually closed to public – will receive visitors in the vicinity of Ground Zero.

At Time Warner Center, find exclusive portraits and interviews with the heroes of September 11. Free admission.

- 20. The Peace Quilt at the Met
Created by Faith Ringgold, the making of this “cover” was attained with the help of pupils between 8 and 19 years of age. In three parts, each made of 12 squares, it resembles different representations of peace, which will be exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

- 21. Dance for peace at Lincoln Center
100 dancers will interpret “The Table of Silence Project”, a public tribute to the victims of September 11. At 8:46 am, when the performance ends, the dancers will raise their hands to the sky in a sign of peace. The public is invited to participate in this last gesture.

- 22. Run or walk in memory of the heroes and victims of September 11

The famous Lights Tribute will be visible again at dusk in the skyline of New York and its surroundings. Seen from a radius of 30 miles, it will turn off at dawn.
