A fact almost universally ignored but key to remember is that women leaders initiated the Paris Agreement adopted at COP21. The Paris Agreement on climate change is the single greatest diplomatic achievement of modern times. Signed by more of 190 countries, it has been ratified within less than a year by more than 80 parties, representing more than 60% of global emissions.

While men like Ban-Ki Moon, Michael Bloomberg and Laurent Fabius were key, this global breakthrough has been concretely delivered by women. Throughout 2014 and 2015, an exceptional group of women headed by Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Ambassador of France for Climate Change Negotiations Laurence Tubiana and the French Minister of Environment Ségolène Royal and have been the true architects of the Paris Agreement.

At the height of COP21 negotiations, a lot of female mayors, answered the call from Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, to act together against climate change, pushing nations to reach an ambitious agreement.

On March 15th, Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chairwoman of C40, was in New York City to chair the C40 #Women4Climate conference.

More than 300 guests from around the world gathered to celebrate women’s leadership in tackling climate change. The event gathered mayors, citizens and businesses, on the many ways women are already building a greener future, and overcoming barriers to leadership positions.

The conference provided a critical platform to advance a shared agenda that spans education, innovation, and economic equality and highlighted the critical role of women leaders in the fight against climate change and air pollution. Anne Hidalgo announced a global Women4Climate mentorship programme dedicated to advancing women in C40 cities.

Our Consul General, Anne-Claire Legendre, also took part in the discussion to assert her commitment to oppose global warming.
