35 American Veterans Receive the Legion of Honor at West Point

On the occasion of the May 8th commemoration ceremonies, the insignia of the French Legion of Honor were bestowed upon 35 American WWII Veterans at the prestigious United States Military Academy of West Point, in New York State.

Decorating the Veterans with the insignia of the Legion of Honor today is a solemn expression of gratitude by France to these men who left their homes, crossed the Atlantic, and courageously faced fire and death, fighting for a country most of them had not even known before.

Established on the Hudson River in 1802, the same year the Legion of Honor was founded, the United States Military Academy of West Point is the oldest military academy in the United States, which still trains officers who fight side by side with the French forces, mainly in Afghanistan.

Toulouse, March 19, 2012

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today is a day of national tragedy – because children have been murdered in cold blood, because a killer entered a school, a school of the Jewish faith. This tragedy devastates the entire national community. I've asked the Minister for National Education for a minute's silence to be organized tomorrow in all schools, in memory of these martyred children.

The Interior Minister will stay as long as necessary in Toulouse – where reinforcements are going to arrive during the day, in agreement with the authorities, particularly the Mayor – until we know who this killer is and the exact links with the tragedy that hit the military community, with young soldiers already killed in Montauban and Toulouse, one West Indian, two of the Muslim faith. We're struck by the similarity of how today's tragedy and those of last week occurred, but we must wait for more detailed evidence from the forensic police to confirm that theory.

In any case, caution is the rule. Jewish schools, Muslim schools in Toulouse and the region will be very closely monitored, places of worship will be very closely monitored and soldiers have received instructions to be cautious.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's a tragedy. Everything must be done to ensure the killer is arrested and held accountable for his crimes, so there are no more victims. But at the same time, our schools must continue to operate, and our compatriots who want to worship in synagogues, in mosques and in churches must be able to continue doing so. We mustn't give in to terror.

And of course, our thoughts go out to those shattered families. To the mother who at that moment lost two of her children and her husband, on the same day. To the head teacher who saw his little girl die before his eyes.

Barbarism, savagery and cruelty cannot win. Hatred cannot win. The Republic is much stronger than all that. Much stronger.

So I ask you all, of course, for remembrance, grief, solidarity with the victims, calm and confidence in the institutions of the Republic to find the man who did this. We're going to find him. A lot of caution and a lot of solidarity.

Thank you to the elected representatives, the Mayor, the regional president and the departmental president. I also want to thank the President of the Consistory, Joël Mergui, and the president of the CRIF [Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France], Richard Prasquier, for accompanying me, and to tell all the authorities of the Jewish communities in Toulouse and the region how close we feel to them.

This murder doesn't concern only the Jewish community: the whole national community is devastated and stands alongside you. Believe me, you can be sure of this.

And tomorrow, in all the schools in France, we'll have a minute's silence in memory of the children of the school. They're our children: they're not just your children, they're ours. And on the Republic's territory, people don't murder children like that without being held accountable.

And let the man who did this know that everything, absolutely everything will be done to find him and hold him accountable.

Thank you – and how I would have preferred to come here, Mr Mayor, in other circumstances. These were images we'd seen in other countries and never in our own. We have no choice but to confront them. To confront and overcome.

I want to underscore my condemnation of what happened in Toulouse and of the deaths of three of our fellow-citizens. The presence of the President and interior minister in that city testify to the government's resolve to ensure, first, that the author or authors of this crime be arrested and brought to justice, and to guarantee the protection of Jewish establishments, particularly in that region. I am obviously taking the same approach in Bordeaux.

Stephen A. ORLINS

Steve Orlins has been President of the National Committee on United States – China Relations (NCUSCR) since 2005. Prior to that, he was the Managing Director of Carlyle Asia, one of Asia's largest private equity funds, and the chairman of the board of Taiwan Broadband Communications. Before working as a senior adviser to AEA Investors in Asia, Mr. Orlins worked for the investment banking firm of Lehman Brothers and served as President of Lehman Brothers Asia from 1987 to 1990. Prior to joining Lehman Brothers, Mr. Orlins practiced law in New York, Hong Kong and Beijing. From 1976 to 1979, Mr. Orlins served in the Office of the Legal Advisor of the United States Department of State. While in that office, he was a member of the legal team that helped establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. Mr. Orlins is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and earned his law degree at Harvard Law School. He speaks Mandarin Chinese and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Claude MEYER

Claude Meyer has pursued a dual career as an international banker and an academic. During the 90's, he held various positions at the Bank of Tokyo Group in Paris and was the Deputy General Manager of the group until 2000. He is currently Associate Professor of International Economics at Sciences Po Paris and Senior Fellow at the research institute GEM-Sciences Po, which is linked to the Brookings Institution. He lectures regularly in China, Japan, Korea and in the US. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics and degrees in Philosophy and Japanese Studies. His research and publications deal mainly with Asian economies and finance, with particular emphasis on the links between economic and strategic issues. He previously taught at Sorbonne University and E.H.E.S.S. (Graduate School in Social Sciences). His last book, China or Japan: Which Will Lead Asia?, Hurst and Co. & New York, Columbia University Press (2012) has been praised by many specialists of Asia, and will be available at the end of the conference.

Edouard Courtial is on visit to New York

“I believe we should be proud to be French. Neither with arrogance nor with a false sense of modesty, honestly acknowledging the difficulties we are facing yet not giving in to despair.”

Between November 15 and 17, 2011, Mr. Edouard Courtial, Minister of State responsible for French Nationals Abroad, visited New York, his third round of visits on his American tour.

After meeting with the members of the Assembly for French Nationals Abroad, Mr. Courtial encountered the New York French Community at a reception given by the Consulate General. “I wished to meet you upon my arrival in order to present my mission to you, and to hear, from you, of your preoccupations and your ambitions.”

Education and Economy were the two strong themes of this first New York visit, a field visit paid to those who daily contribute to enhancing the French influence in New York.

On Wednesday, November 16, Mr. Courtial paid a visit to the Lycée Français, the French-American Charter School of Harlem, and the University of Columbia. He was thus able to meet the different establishments' Directors, Professors, and Representatives of the Student- Parents' Board: so many meetings involving the large offer of bilingual programs in New York and that of inter-school and university exchanges.

“Financial crisis, economic crisis, budgetary crisis, none spared either Europe or the United States. In such circumstances, both our countries must show the same level of determination”, Edouard Courtial had declared upon his arrival. In order to bring up the economic situation, as well as the situation of French companies, on the agenda, the Secretary of State had lunch with the Board of the French-American Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, November 16, before meeting the following day with the Counselors of foreign commerce.

4th competition for the French-American Entrepreneurship Award

The 4th competition for the French-American Entrepreneurship Award is now open for candidacies – until December 31st, 2011!

Created in 2008 by Club 600 with the objective of assisting young French entrepreneurs to succeed in the United States, the competition is now jointly organized by the Club 600 and the French-American Chamber of Commerce (FACC).

The winner will enjoy a year-long advice on strategic, legislative, accounting and financial issues. The advice will be provided by a team comprised of Club 600 and FACC members with the necessary experience in the relevant business domain. The person will also receive $10,000 as a contribution to financing the project, as well as a year's membership to Club 600 and the FACC which will enable him or her to gain access to the members' network.

In order to participate, entrepreneurial projects must be in their pre-launching or launching phase, have the objective of private commercial development on the U.S. market, and be managed by a young French entrepreneur not over the age of 35. Applications should be submitted online before December 31, 2011, on the French-American Entrepreneurship Award site.

Since its foundation, the French-American Entrepreneurship Award has awarded three entrepreneurial projects: Les Canelés de Céline by Céline Legros in 2010, Hypios by Stéphane Chong and Klaus Speidel in 2009, and Fruition Sciences by Sébastien Payen and Thibaut Scholash in 2008.

Three finalists will be announced on January 15, 2012, and on February 5th they will present their projects in front of the committee. The jury will be composed of Club 600 and FACC-NY members competent in a wide variety of business sectors: Martin Bischoff (Labrador USA), Anne Busquet (AMB Advisors), Emmanuel Cargill (Pernod-Ricard USA), Diana Castelnuovo-Tedesco (Fraiche PR), Yves Coleon (Transmark Partners), Stephan Thollot (Ernst and Young LLP).

The winner of the French-American Entrepreneurship Award 2011 will be announced on February 6, 2012.

Teh Consulate General of France stay fully mobilized since Saturday, August 27th to help French citizens stcuck in NYC and waiting for a flight back to France or Europe.

JFK airport re-opened on Monday morning, 29th of August 2011 at 6 am. Departing flights re-started at noon the same day.

Newark airport re-opened on Monday morning, 29th of August 2011 at 6 am. Departing flights re-started at noon the same day.

La Guardia airport is working both ways since Monday 29th of August 7 am.
